Plot Twister

AI Dungeon alternatives

Updated · By Reno Labs

If you want another open-ended AI text adventure where you type what you do, try FableAI, Everweave or Friends & Fables. If you want a narrator-led world, try Hidden Door. If you want to write with an AI, try NovelAI. If you want to steer characters through a short pixel-art story instead of being the hero, that is Plot Twister, which we make.

Disclosure. We make Plot Twister, which is one of the six alternatives below. It is a different kind of game from AI Dungeon, and we say so. Facts about other products come from their websites and US App Store listings, read in October 2026.

How we chose

We picked products that are live, have an official site or App Store listing we could read, and generate story text with AI. We skipped any we could not verify. Infinite Worlds' site showed an error when we loaded it, and Perchance's pages refused our request, so neither is listed. We give price models only as the sources show them.

Who AI Dungeon fits

AI Dungeon, made by Latitude, is an AI text adventure. Its site describes open-ended stories where you guide every choice, online or in the app. The iOS listing says you can start from a prebuilt scenario or write your own, play with friends in multiplayer, browse scenarios other players wrote, and rewind a decision. It also describes Story Cards and Memory Banks, which store facts the AI should remember. The listing is rated 13+ (US App Store, October 2026).

It fits you if you like a blank page, a sandbox, and being the hero. The listing says you can play free without ads. Its pricing page says paid memberships include monthly Credits that raise the amount of story the AI sees or make images, and the iOS listing also sells Credits packs.

People looking at alternatives often want something different, not something better. We did not survey players, so we list needs, not complaints: a different price structure, dice and rules, a narrator who runs a world, a story with a fixed plot, or a pocket-sized app built for phones. For the name: AI Dungeon 2 was the second version of the game, so searches for it land on the same product.

It fits you if you want to author a story with AI help instead of playing one. novelai.net

Plot Twister

Plot Twister is our app, and it is not a free-text adventure where you are the hero. You are an unseen hand behind a pixel-art story. You whisper a thought into a character's head, chosen from presets or typed in your own words up to 500 characters, or inject an event. The AI writes what happens next. You can rewind and branch, reach one of several endings, and share a Plot Twist Score recap card.

It has 10 hand-built episodes. For what it sells in-app, see its App Store listing. It is rated 16+, episodes carry content warnings, and stories are labeled AI-generated. It fits you if you like AI-written stories but want characters with their own plot, in short sessions. Pick AI Dungeon or FableAI if you want to type your own actions. See the Plot Twister page.

Plot Twister: whisper into characters' heads and rewrite the story. Rated 16+.
