DECADE

GeoGuessr alternatives

Updated · Reno Labs

The best free GeoGuessr alternatives are WorldGuessr, which keeps the drop-a-pin-on-a-street-view game and says every mode is free with ads, and City Guesser, which plays short street videos instead. Geotastic suits multiplayer, Worldle and Seterra are quicker map quizzes. TimeGuessr adds a year to the location, and our own Decade asks for the year alone. Below is what each one does, where it runs and what it costs, as of October 2026.

We make Decade. It is not a location game, so it is here for one kind of player: someone who likes the photo-reading half of GeoGuessr and would rather guess the year. We say where every other game fits better.

How we chose We started from the games that Google and alternatives round-ups name most often for this search, then read each game's own site, and its App Store listing where it has one, in October 2026. We state only what those sources say, and we write “not stated” instead of guessing. We left out OpenGuessr, a popular name on these lists, because its site would not load for us, so we could not check its terms first-hand. We found no recent public review data we could cite fairly, so the “What to weigh” notes are our own reading of each game's documented approach. The order follows how close each game is to GeoGuessr, not a score.

THE ORIGINAL

What GeoGuessr gives you for free

GeoGuessr drops you into a street-level view and asks where in the world you are. Its free page offers a Daily Challenge of “5 locations, refreshed daily”, with no subscription needed, though you do need to sign up. The same page marks exploring the globe, multiplayer, party games, custom content and the avatar shop as included in a subscription.

Its pricing page lists a limited free tier and two paid tiers: USD 3.99 a month billed yearly (USD 47.88) and USD 5.99 a month billed yearly (USD 71.88), before tax, as of October 2026. Paid play is ad-free with unlimited play in all modes. GeoGuessr runs on the web, Steam, iOS and Android. As of October 2026 its iPhone app is free to download with a 4.5 rating from 31,918 ratings, and its listing says a subscription is required for full access.

What to weigh If the Daily Challenge is all you play, you may not need anything else. People who look elsewhere usually want unlimited rounds, private games with friends, or a shorter puzzle without paying for a subscription. The games below cover each of those.

STREET VIEW, LIKE GEOGUESSR

FRAME 01 · STREET VIEW

WorldGuessr

WorldGuessr is the closest match: you look around a street-level scene and place a pin. Its site says: “Every mode, unlimited rounds. Ads pay for it.” Singleplayer needs no account. It lists ranked duels, 2v2, unranked matches, parties, a Country and Continent Guesser, a library of player-made maps, and a Daily Challenge of the same three locations for everyone, at 60 seconds per round.

The code is public on GitHub under the PolyForm Noncommercial licence, so it is source-available rather than open source in the strict sense. It runs on the web, Android and iOS. The site links its iPhone app, which the App Store lists as free with a 4.9 rating from 413 ratings as of October 2026; the listing says “No subscription to play.” Fit The best pick if you want GeoGuessr's core game and unlimited rounds, and you don't mind ads.

FRAME 02 · STREET VIDEO

City Guesser

City Guesser, part of the Virtual Vacation site, plays a short street video, and you click the map to guess where it was filmed. A timed mode stops the video after a set number of seconds. A banner reads “Help keep City Guesser free for everyone” and links to Ko-fi. We found no app, so plan on a browser. Fit Good if moving footage, with traffic, signs and people, helps you more than a still panorama.

FRAME 03 · MULTIPLAYER

Geotastic

Geotastic describes itself as a free-to-play, multiplayer-focused geo quiz, and its site title calls it crowdfunded. Its site description ends: “A free alternative to geoguessr.” Its pages load almost entirely in JavaScript, so we could not read its full list of modes or any paid extras, and we don't state them. Fit Worth a look if you mainly play against friends. Check its site for current modes before you plan a game night.

SHORTER MAP PUZZLES

FRAME 04 · COUNTRY OUTLINES

Worldle

Worldle shows a country's silhouette, and you have six attempts to name it. The site says it is completely free to play in the browser, shows ads with a “Remove Ads” option, and puts the puzzle archive behind a Teuteuf Games Premium membership. Its official iPhone app is free with a 4.8 rating from 2,910 ratings as of October 2026. Fit A one-minute daily for when a full GeoGuessr round is too long.

FRAME 05 · MAP QUIZZES

Seterra

Seterra is a map quiz rather than a street-view game: you click countries, capitals, rivers and more on a blank map. Its home page marks it as free to play and lists more than 400 map quizzes, and the site links apps for iPhone and Android. Seterra pages also live on geoguessr.com, and its iPhone app (4.8 from 16,734 ratings as of October 2026) is sold by GeoGuessr AB, so this is a sibling more than a rival. Fit The fastest way to learn the map knowledge that makes you better at GeoGuessr.

SWAP THE PLACE FOR A YEAR

FRAME 06 · PLACE AND YEAR

TimeGuessr

TimeGuessr sums itself up as “Guess where and when historic photos were taken.” You still drop a pin, but you also set a year. The site offers random games, games against other players and a daily challenge. Its iPhone app is free with a 4.9 rating from 2,736 ratings as of October 2026, and its listing says new photos are added daily. Our games like TimeGuessr guide compares it with WhenTaken, Chronophoto and others. Fit The natural next step if you like GeoGuessr and history.

FRAME 07 · YEAR ONLY · WE MAKE THIS ONE

Decade

We make Decade. It drops the map entirely. Each day brings five historical photos, the same five for everyone, and you guess the year of each by dragging a slider or typing it, one guess per photo. An exact year scores 1,000 points, so a perfect set is 5,000, and the share card shows how close you were without giving away the answers. Photos come from public archives; the Library of Congress and Wikimedia Commons lead the collection. Free covers the daily set, one extra practice set a day and streak tracking.

Fit Pick it if the part of GeoGuessr you enjoy most is reading clues in a photo: cars, clothes, signs and print quality. It is the wrong pick if you want to guess places, since there is no location guess at all. It needs an iPhone. More in our guess-the-year games guide, or get Decade on the App Store.
