Games like TimeGuessr
The closest games to TimeGuessr are WhenTaken and Pointguessr, which also ask you to place a photo on a map as well as in time. If you only want the year, Chronophoto, Which Year and our own Decade skip the map. We make Decade, so treat its place here as a disclosure first and a pick second.
We make Decade. It is listed because it suits one kind of player: year-only guessing, five photos a day, on iPhone. Where another game fits you better, we say so.
How we chose We started with the games that show up beside TimeGuessr, WhenTaken and Chronophoto in Google results, then added year-guessing games found in the same results. In October 2026 we read each game's own site, and its App Store listing where it has one. We state only what those sources say. Where a site does not mention price, the table says “not stated” rather than guessing. The order below groups games by what you guess; it is not a ranking.
| Game | You guess | Where | Daily mode | Price, as the source states it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TimeGuessr | Year and location | Web, iOS, Android | Yes | App Store lists it as free (Oct 2026); Google Play lists in-app purchases |
| WhenTaken | Year and location | Web | Yes | Site shows a “Remove ads” option |
| Pointguessr | Year and location | Web | Yes, 5 photos | Not stated |
| Chronophoto | Year | Web; iPhone app | Yes | iPhone listing says free to play, no paywall |
| Which Year | Year | Web | Yes | Not stated |
| Photoguesser | Year | Web | Yes | Site description says “Play free now” |
| Decade | Year | iPhone | Yes, 5 photos | Free daily set; Pro is optional |
YEAR AND LOCATION
FRAME 01 · YEAR AND LOCATION
TimeGuessr
TimeGuessr is the game the others are measured against. You see a historical photograph, drop a pin on a map, pick a year, and score more the closer you get. Its App Store description lists a daily game, friend challenges, a leaderboard and rounds you can build yourself. The site also offers random games with an optional time limit, and a multiplayer mode.
It runs in the browser and as an iOS app (iOS 16.4 or later), and has a Google Play listing. As of October 2026 the App Store shows it as free, with a 4.9 rating from 2,707 ratings. Fit Best if the map is half the fun for you.
FRAME 02 · YEAR AND LOCATION
WhenTaken
WhenTaken asks for the same two things: place a pin, then set the year with a slider from 1860 to 2026 or by typing it. The site lists a daily game, an archive, and a community section where you can create your own game. Its footer credits Teuteuf Games. We found no iPhone app of this name in a US App Store search in October 2026, so it is a web game. The site shows a “Remove ads” option, which suggests ads in the free version.
Fit A free-to-start browser alternative with the same year-plus-place shape.
FRAME 03 · YEAR AND LOCATION
Pointguessr
Pointguessr says it was inspired by TimeGuessr. You pin the place and guess the year on historical photos. It offers endless play and a daily challenge of five new photos, and its main addition is real-time play with friends: share a link and everyone sees the same photo. The site labels itself “v0.1.3 alpha”, so expect rough edges. Fit Good for playing together on a call.
YEAR ONLY
FRAME 04 · YEAR ONLY
Chronophoto
Chronophoto drops the map. You see a photo and name the year. The website has Unlimited, Daily and Party modes. In Party mode, everyone who enters the same passcode gets the same five photos. You can narrow the photo years (the default range is 1900 to 2025), and it tracks streaks and stats.
An iPhone app called Chronophoto, from the developer Weston Tuescher, says it is a rebuild of the browser game. Its listing describes five modes (Daily, Flash, Party, Survival and Classic) and says “Free to play. No paywall.” The browser site links to a different App Store ID that did not resolve in the US store when we checked, so we cannot confirm how the two relate. A separate app, ChronoPhoto Trivia Puzzle Quiz from Pepperbit, shares the name. Fit The most direct year-only game, with several ways to play.
FRAME 05 · YEAR ONLY
Which Year
Which Year is a browser game with a timeline slider from 1850 to 2025 and a daily challenge with a new set of photos each day. Closer guesses score more. Its distinctive feature is a hint that reveals one digit of the correct year, usable once per digit per game. Fit Good if you want a hint to fall back on.
FRAME 06 · YEAR ONLY
Photoguesser
Photoguesser, by Tasos Gkagkas, asks you to find clues in a photo and estimate the year. The site offers a daily challenge and lets you create or join a game with others. Fit A simple browser option, with a social angle.
FRAME 07 · YEAR ONLY · WE MAKE THIS ONE
Decade
We make Decade. It is an iPhone app. Each day has five photos, the same five for everyone, and you get one guess per photo. Drag a slider from 1850 to the current year or type four digits. Each photo scores up to 1,000 points for a total of 5,000, and points fall with distance until they reach zero at 60 years off. The photos come from public archives; the Library of Congress and Wikimedia Commons lead the collection.
Decade has no location guessing and no map. Its share card shows your score and a colour swatch per photo, marked too early, too late or exact, and never prints the year, so friends can compare without spoilers. Free covers the daily set, one extra practice set a day and streak tracking. Decade Pro is optional, and the price is shown in the app before you buy.
Fit Choose Decade if you want a quick year-only daily on your phone. Choose TimeGuessr or WhenTaken if you want the geography too. You can try one round in your browser first. Get Decade on the App Store.
