How to propagate ZZ Plant

Leaf cuttings

Difficulty: Easy but very slowTimeline: Rhizomes form in 3-9 months; patience required.
  1. Pluck healthy leaflets, keeping the base intact.
  2. Let the cut ends callus for a day.
  3. Insert the base into moist, well-draining soil.
  4. Keep warm and barely moist; a tiny rhizome bulb forms before roots.

Division

Difficulty: EasyTimeline: Immediate; fastest way to multiply.
  1. Unpot and separate the rhizome clumps by hand or with a clean knife.
  2. Pot each section with at least one stem and some roots.
  3. Water lightly and place in indirect light.

Common ZZ Plant problems & fixes

Yellowing stalks

Overwatering / rot. Let soil dry fully and water far less.

Drooping stems

Either very underwatered or rotting from overwatering — check the soil and rhizomes.

Leggy growth

Too little light. Move to brighter indirect light for fuller growth.
