A complete guide to growing and propagating Verbena: its care needs, how to take cuttings and root them, how long propagation takes, and how to fix the most common problems.

Verbena care at a glance

☀ïļ Light
Full sun; needs at least 6 hours for continuous flowering.
💧 Water
Water when the top inch dries; drought-tolerant once established.
ðŸŠī Soil
Light, well-draining soil.
ðŸ’Ļ Humidity
Tender perennial grown as an annual; some types hardy in zones 7-10.
ðŸū Toxicity
Non-toxic to cats and dogs; garden verbena is not on the ASPCA toxic list. (Lantana, a relative, is toxic.)

How to propagate Verbena

Softwood cuttings

Difficulty: EasyTimeline: Roots in 2-3 weeks; pot on once rooted.
  1. Take a 3-4 inch non-flowering tip cutting below a node.
  2. Strip the lower leaves and dip the base in rooting hormone.
  3. Insert into moist cutting mix and keep lightly humid.
  4. Pot on once rooted.

Seed

Difficulty: ModerateTimeline: Germinates in 2-3 weeks; blooms in 10-12 weeks.
  1. Sow seeds and cover lightly; they germinate best in darkness.
  2. Keep warm and moist until sprouts appear.
  3. Pot on seedlings once they have a few true leaves.
  4. Harden off and plant out after the last frost.

Common Verbena problems & fixes

Cuttings rot before they root

Too wet or no airflow. Use a free-draining mix, water sparingly, and vent the humidity cover daily.

Cuttings wilt after taking them

Normal at first — keep humidity high under a dome, out of direct sun, until roots form and perk them up.

Powdery mildew on leaves

Poor airflow and damp foliage. Space plants out, water at the base, and improve circulation.
