How to propagate Tomato
Water (stem cuttings)
- Snap off a healthy sucker (the shoot growing in a leaf axil) 4-6 inches long.
- Remove the lower leaves and set the stem in a glass of water.
- Keep in bright light and change the water every few days.
- Pot up or plant out once roots are 1-2 inches long.
Soil (direct)
- Take a 6-inch sucker or tip cutting and strip the lower leaves.
- Insert the bare stem deep into moist potting mix.
- Keep warm and evenly moist in bright light.
- Transplant once rooted and growing.
Common Tomato problems & fixes
Cuttings rot before they root
Too wet or no airflow. Use a free-draining mix, water sparingly, and vent the humidity cover daily.
Cuttings wilt after taking them
Normal at first â keep humidity high under a dome, out of direct sun, until roots form and perk them up.
Powdery mildew on leaves
Poor airflow and damp foliage. Space plants out, water at the base, and improve circulation.
