How to propagate Rhododendron
Layering
- Bend a low, flexible branch to the ground.
- Nick the underside and pin it into acidic soil.
- Cover with soil, leaving the growing tip exposed.
- Keep moist and sever from the parent once rooted.
Softwood cuttings
- Take 3-4 inch semi-ripe cuttings in late summer.
- Wound the base, strip lower leaves, and dip in rooting hormone.
- Insert into acidic, gritty mix and cover with a dome.
- Keep warm and be patient; pot on gently once rooted.
Common Rhododendron problems & fixes
Cuttings rot before they root
Too wet or no airflow. Use a free-draining mix, water sparingly, and vent the humidity cover daily.
Cuttings wilt after taking them
Normal at first â keep humidity high under a dome, out of direct sun, until roots form and perk them up.
Powdery mildew on leaves
Poor airflow and damp foliage. Space plants out, water at the base, and improve circulation.
