How to propagate Rabbit's Foot Fern

Rhizome cuttings

Difficulty: ModerateTimeline: Roots in 4-8 weeks.
  1. Locate a healthy surface rhizome with at least one frond.
  2. Cut a 2-3 inch section that includes a growing tip.
  3. Pin it onto moist mix or sphagnum so the underside contacts the medium.
  4. Keep humid and warm until new roots anchor it and fronds emerge.

Division

Difficulty: ModerateTimeline: Establishes in 4-8 weeks.
  1. Water the day before, then unpot and loosen the root ball.
  2. Split the clump into sections, each with fronds and a share of roots.
  3. Pull or cut the sections apart, keeping crowns intact.
  4. Pot each into rich, peaty mix at the same depth.
  5. Keep warm, humid and evenly moist while they recover.

Common Rabbit's Foot Fern problems & fixes

Brown, crispy fronds

Low humidity or dry soil. Keep the soil evenly moist and raise humidity with a tray or humidifier.

Yellowing fronds

Usually overwatering or too much direct sun. Move to bright indirect light and let only the very top of the soil dry.

Fronds dropping

Sudden dryness or cold drafts. Keep moisture consistent and move away from heat vents and doors.
