How to propagate Petunia
Softwood cuttings
- Take a 3-4 inch non-flowering tip cutting below a node.
- Strip the lower leaves and pinch off any buds.
- Dip the base in rooting hormone and insert into moist cutting mix.
- Cover loosely to hold humidity and keep bright.
- Pot on once rooted.
Seed
- Surface-sow the tiny seeds and press in lightly; they need light.
- Keep warm and moist until germination.
- Pot on seedlings once they have a few true leaves.
- Harden off and plant out after all danger of frost.
Common Petunia problems & fixes
Cuttings rot before they root
Too wet or no airflow. Use a free-draining mix, water sparingly, and vent the humidity cover daily.
Cuttings wilt after taking them
Normal at first â keep humidity high under a dome, out of direct sun, until roots form and perk them up.
Powdery mildew on leaves
Poor airflow and damp foliage. Space plants out, water at the base, and improve circulation.
