How to propagate Hoya Obovata
Water (stem cuttings)
- Cut a vine section with at least 2 nodes and one or two leaves.
- Remove the lowest leaf so a bare node sits below the waterline.
- Place in a jar of water in bright, indirect light.
- Change the water weekly; roots emerge from the nodes.
- Pot into a chunky, bark-rich mix once rooted.
Soil (stem cuttings)
- Take a cutting with 2+ nodes and let the cut end callus for an hour.
- Dip in rooting hormone (optional) and insert a node into moist, airy mix.
- Cover loosely to hold humidity and keep warm.
- Keep the mix barely moist until new leaves appear.
Common Hoya Obovata problems & fixes
Shriveled, wrinkled leaves
Underwatering â give a thorough soak and let it drain fully, then wait until the soil is bone dry.
Mushy, translucent leaves or stems
Overwatering and rot. Cut back watering, repot into a gritty fast-draining mix, and remove any rotted roots.
Stretched, pale growth
Too little light (etiolation). Move to bright, direct light; behead and re-root the stretched top to reset a compact shape.
