How to propagate Oregano
Water (stem cuttings)
- Cut a 4-inch non-flowering stem just below a node.
- Strip the lower leaves and place the node in water.
- Keep on a bright sill and refresh the water every few days.
- Pot up once roots appear.
Division
- Dig up an established clump in spring.
- Split it into sections with roots and shoots.
- Replant at the same depth in well-draining soil.
- Water in and keep lightly moist while establishing.
Common Oregano problems & fixes
Leggy, sparse stems
Not enough light or overdue for a trim. Give 6+ hours of sun and pinch the tips regularly to force bushier growth.
Wilting
Usually dry soil â herbs drink fast in sun. Water when the top inch dries and make sure the pot drains freely.
Bolting (flowering) and bitter leaves
Heat stress. Pinch off flower buds early to keep the leaves tender and extend the harvest.
