How to propagate Mint
Water (stem cuttings)
- Cut a 4-5 inch healthy stem just below a node.
- Remove the lower leaves and set the node underwater in a jar.
- Keep on a bright sill and refresh the water every few days.
- Pot up into moist soil once roots appear.
Division
- Dig up an established clump in spring or fall.
- Pull or cut a section that has both roots and shoots.
- Replant the division at the same depth in moist soil.
- Water in well and keep evenly moist while it establishes.
Common Mint problems & fixes
Leggy, sparse stems
Not enough light or overdue for a trim. Give 6+ hours of sun and pinch the tips regularly to force bushier growth.
Wilting
Usually dry soil â herbs drink fast in sun. Water when the top inch dries and make sure the pot drains freely.
Bolting (flowering) and bitter leaves
Heat stress. Pinch off flower buds early to keep the leaves tender and extend the harvest.
