How to propagate Marjoram
Water (stem cuttings)
- Cut a 4-inch non-flowering stem below a node.
- Strip the lower leaves and set the node in water.
- Keep on a bright sill and refresh the water every few days.
- Pot up once roots appear.
Seed
- Surface-sow the tiny seeds and press in lightly; they need light.
- Keep warm at 70F and moist until germination.
- Pot on seedlings once they have a few true leaves.
- Harden off and plant out after all danger of frost.
Common Marjoram problems & fixes
Leggy, sparse stems
Not enough light or overdue for a trim. Give 6+ hours of sun and pinch the tips regularly to force bushier growth.
Wilting
Usually dry soil â herbs drink fast in sun. Water when the top inch dries and make sure the pot drains freely.
Bolting (flowering) and bitter leaves
Heat stress. Pinch off flower buds early to keep the leaves tender and extend the harvest.
