How to propagate Dill

Seed

Difficulty: EasyTimeline: Germinates in 10-14 days; harvest leaves in 6-8 weeks.
  1. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep directly in place, as dill resents transplanting from its taproot.
  2. Keep evenly moist until germination.
  3. Thin seedlings to 8-10 inches apart.
  4. Succession sow every few weeks for a steady supply.

Common Dill problems & fixes

Leggy, sparse stems

Not enough light or overdue for a trim. Give 6+ hours of sun and pinch the tips regularly to force bushier growth.

Wilting

Usually dry soil — herbs drink fast in sun. Water when the top inch dries and make sure the pot drains freely.

Bolting (flowering) and bitter leaves

Heat stress. Pinch off flower buds early to keep the leaves tender and extend the harvest.
