How to propagate Cilantro

Seed

Difficulty: EasyTimeline: Germinates in 7-14 days; harvest leaves in 3-4 weeks.
  1. Gently crush the round seed husks to speed germination.
  2. Sow 1/4-1/2 inch deep directly where it will grow, as it dislikes transplanting.
  3. Keep evenly moist and thin seedlings to 4-6 inches apart.
  4. Sow every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply.

Common Cilantro problems & fixes

Leggy, sparse stems

Not enough light or overdue for a trim. Give 6+ hours of sun and pinch the tips regularly to force bushier growth.

Wilting

Usually dry soil — herbs drink fast in sun. Water when the top inch dries and make sure the pot drains freely.

Bolting (flowering) and bitter leaves

Heat stress. Pinch off flower buds early to keep the leaves tender and extend the harvest.
