How to propagate Bay Laurel
Softwood cuttings
- Take 4-6 inch semi-ripe cuttings in late summer.
- Strip the lower leaves and wound the base, then dip in rooting hormone.
- Insert into gritty, moist cutting mix.
- Cover with a humidity dome, keep warm, and be patient.
- Pot on gently once rooted.
Layering
- Bend a low branch down to the soil.
- Nick the underside and pin it into a shallow trench.
- Cover with soil, leaving the tip exposed, and keep moist.
- Sever from the parent and transplant once well rooted.
Common Bay Laurel problems & fixes
Leggy, sparse stems
Not enough light or overdue for a trim. Give 6+ hours of sun and pinch the tips regularly to force bushier growth.
Wilting
Usually dry soil â herbs drink fast in sun. Water when the top inch dries and make sure the pot drains freely.
Bolting (flowering) and bitter leaves
Heat stress. Pinch off flower buds early to keep the leaves tender and extend the harvest.
