How to propagate Basil
Water (stem cuttings)
- Snip a 4-inch stem tip just below a leaf node, ideally a non-flowering shoot.
- Strip the lower leaves so the bottom node sits below the waterline.
- Place in a glass of water on a bright windowsill, out of harsh midday sun.
- Change the water every 2-3 days to keep it fresh.
- Pot into moist potting mix once roots are 1-2 inches long.
Seed
- Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in warm, moist seed-starting mix.
- Keep at 70F+ in bright light until sprouts appear.
- Thin to the strongest seedlings and pot on when they have two true leaves.
- Harden off and plant out once nights stay above 50F.
Common Basil problems & fixes
Leggy, sparse stems
Not enough light or overdue for a trim. Give 6+ hours of sun and pinch the tips regularly to force bushier growth.
Wilting
Usually dry soil â herbs drink fast in sun. Water when the top inch dries and make sure the pot drains freely.
Bolting (flowering) and bitter leaves
Heat stress. Pinch off flower buds early to keep the leaves tender and extend the harvest.
