How to propagate Grape
Hardwood cuttings
- Take pencil-thick dormant cuttings with 3-4 buds in late winter.
- Insert so only the top bud sits above moist, gritty soil.
- Keep just moist in a bright, sheltered spot.
- Transplant once shoots and roots are established.
Layering
- Bend a long, flexible cane down to the soil.
- Pin it into a shallow trench, leaving the tip exposed.
- Cover with soil and keep moist while roots form.
- Sever and transplant the rooted section.
Common Grape problems & fixes
Cuttings rot before they root
Too wet or no airflow. Use a free-draining mix, water sparingly, and vent the humidity cover daily.
Cuttings wilt after taking them
Normal at first â keep humidity high under a dome, out of direct sun, until roots form and perk them up.
Powdery mildew on leaves
Poor airflow and damp foliage. Space plants out, water at the base, and improve circulation.
