A complete guide to growing and propagating Cyclamen: its care needs, how to take cuttings and root them, how long propagation takes, and how to fix the most common problems.

Cyclamen care at a glance

☀ïļ Light
Bright, indirect light and cool temperatures; it blooms in winter and goes dormant in summer heat.
💧 Water
Water from the bottom when the top of the soil dries; keep water off the crown to prevent rot.
ðŸŠī Soil
Well-draining potting mix.
ðŸ’Ļ Humidity
Prefers moderate humidity, 40-50%.
ðŸū Toxicity
Toxic to cats and dogs (saponins, concentrated in the tuber/roots; can cause serious symptoms if the tuber is eaten).

How to propagate Cyclamen

Seed

Difficulty: HardTimeline: Germinates in 4-8 weeks in darkness; blooms in about a year.
  1. Soak fresh seed overnight, then sow shallowly in moist mix.
  2. Cover to exclude light and keep cool (around 60F).
  3. Uncover once seedlings sprout and give bright, indirect light.
  4. Pot on individually as they grow. Cyclamen is grown from seed; tuber division is risky and prone to rot.

Common Cyclamen problems & fixes

Yellow leaves

Usually overwatering. Let the soil dry more between waterings and confirm the pot drains well.

Brown, crispy leaf tips

Low humidity or salt buildup. Raise humidity and flush the soil with plain water occasionally.

Leggy growth / small new leaves

Too little light. Move to brighter indirect light and prune to encourage fuller growth.
