How to propagate Crown of Thorns

Stem cuttings

Difficulty: ModerateTimeline: Roots in 4-8 weeks.
  1. Wearing gloves, cut a 4-6 inch stem tip (the sap is irritating).
  2. Rinse or blot the cut end and let it callus for several days.
  3. Insert the callused end into dry, gritty mix.
  4. Keep warm and barely moist in bright light until it roots.

Common Crown of Thorns problems & fixes

Shriveled, wrinkled leaves

Underwatering — give a thorough soak and let it drain fully, then wait until the soil is bone dry.

Mushy, translucent leaves or stems

Overwatering and rot. Cut back watering, repot into a gritty fast-draining mix, and remove any rotted roots.

Stretched, pale growth

Too little light (etiolation). Move to bright, direct light; behead and re-root the stretched top to reset a compact shape.
