How to propagate Blueberry
Softwood cuttings
- Take 4-inch tip cuttings of soft new growth in early summer.
- Strip the lower leaves and dip the base in rooting hormone.
- Insert into acidic, moist cutting mix (peat and perlite).
- Cover with a humidity dome and keep warm and bright.
- Pot on into acidic mix once rooted.
Hardwood cuttings
- Take pencil-thick dormant cuttings in late winter.
- Insert two-thirds deep into acidic, moist rooting mix.
- Keep cool and just moist in bright light.
- Pot on once rooted and growing.
Common Blueberry problems & fixes
Cuttings rot before they root
Too wet or no airflow. Use a free-draining mix, water sparingly, and vent the humidity cover daily.
Cuttings wilt after taking them
Normal at first â keep humidity high under a dome, out of direct sun, until roots form and perk them up.
Powdery mildew on leaves
Poor airflow and damp foliage. Space plants out, water at the base, and improve circulation.
