How to propagate Azalea
Softwood cuttings
- Take 3-4 inch semi-ripe cuttings in early summer.
- Wound the base, strip lower leaves, and dip in rooting hormone.
- Insert into acidic, gritty cutting mix.
- Cover with a humidity dome and keep warm; be patient.
- Pot on gently once rooted.
Layering
- Bend a low branch to the soil and nick the underside.
- Pin it into acidic soil and cover, leaving the tip exposed.
- Keep moist while roots form.
- Sever and transplant once well rooted.
Common Azalea problems & fixes
Cuttings rot before they root
Too wet or no airflow. Use a free-draining mix, water sparingly, and vent the humidity cover daily.
Cuttings wilt after taking them
Normal at first â keep humidity high under a dome, out of direct sun, until roots form and perk them up.
Powdery mildew on leaves
Poor airflow and damp foliage. Space plants out, water at the base, and improve circulation.
